A regular sound at school for boys and girls, and at home for me and my two sisters. Fewer strokes but harder certainly quietened us all down years ago. One teacher named his big plimsoll "the leveller" because he could use it in the same way on boys and girls bottoms, whereas the cane was usually applied to girls hands and usually to boys behinds. Six with the headmasters slipper on my bare bottom before nine o'clock one morning had me screaming my head off, even though I was trying to be brave as a girl from my class was waiting outside the office for her turn. I am sure her knickers gave her no protection, and for the rest of the day we could at least identify with each others discomfort sitting on old wooden seats. Nine days later I still had some bruising on my buttocks. Two weeks later Melanie was back to the headmaster for another slippering.. The silly girl.
